Do you know where the word “aunt” comes from? Next, China story network editor will explain it to you.
“Aunt” is a very common name in modern society, and her identity is relatively embarrassing. As long as she is a little older woman, she can be called “aunt”. The aunt who cooks in the staff canteen, the aunt who manages the dormitory on the university campus, the aunt who cleans the street in the city, and the woman who cleans the office building are also called aunts.
Before the new generation of Post-00, they were also “robbed of jobs” by the older generation of post-90s girls, calling themselves “old aunts”.
In a word, in these days, aunt is almost the same as “beauty”, which is a rotten street. But speaking of its origin, most people probably don’t know. It’s quite beautiful, and it’s also related to an ancient fairy.
01 Dayu and the ancestor of fox Fairy
In many fairy tales we hear in modern times, there is a role setting of “Fox spirits”, and the ancestor of fox spirits is the Tu Shan clan. According to the records in the spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Dayu was busy with flood control all the year round and had no time to fall in love. When he came to Tu mountain all the way East, he remembered that his life had not been settled. It was inevitable that he was a little sad, so he made a few exclamations, which roughly meant that there were thirty people in his eyes, and he didn’t even have a wife. If he couldn’t do well with his family in the future, he would have to break the incense in his hand.
The speaker is careless, but the listener is intentional. Dayu’s lament was heard by a Nine Tailed Fox of Tu Shan’s, so she sang a love song, opened Dayu’s door curtain and entered the tent, confessed to her face, poured out her admiration, and said she was willing to give birth to a monkey for him.
The song that she sang in those days is still popular in Tushan area: “suisui white fox, jiuweihe. My family is Jiayi, and the guests are king. When I become a family and a room, I create a prosperous place. When heaven and man come, I will do it here”.
Main idea of the lyrics: I am a beautiful white fox with nine big tails, known as “Tu Shan Fan Bingbing”. Recently, a distinguished guest came to my hometown. He is the king of China. If I can marry him, our strong alliance will make his family Ding prosperous and the dynasty prosperous. This is a god given opportunity. What else do I have to hesitate?
This is the earliest legend about the Nine Tailed Fox. The Nine Tailed Fox in the earlier book of mountains and seas still does not have human shape and human nature. It is a monster that can learn to bark and eat people from babies.
Since then, the legends of the Nine Tailed Fox fairy and the fox spirit in journey to the west, the romance of gods, and the strange tales of Liaozhai all came from here. Therefore, Tu Shan’s family is the ancestor of the fox fairy family.
02 the birth of “aunt God”
The formal appearance of the title “aunt” should be around the northern and Southern Dynasties. There is a sentence in the biography of Prince Mao of Qi Jin’an in the Southern History: “if you make your aunt win because of this, may the Buddhas make China (flowers) not wither unexpectedly”. At this time, Xiao Zimao, king of Jin’an, began to call his concubine “aunt”.
It is also said that Dayu actually married two daughters-in-law in Tushan. They were sisters. Later, his sister gave birth to a son for Dayu, Xia Qi, the founding monarch of the Xia Dynasty, and this sister was Xia Qi’s biological aunt.
Since then, aunt has always been the exclusive title of “aunt”.
People familiar with the history of the Tang Dynasty know that ancient Chinese emperors, from the three emperors and the five emperors to the first emperor of Qin, have always adhered to a “national code”, a national sacrificial activity – Mount Tai Fengchan. But when Wu Zetian arrived in the Tang Dynasty, maybe she knew that her throne came from a wrong path, and she was ashamed in her heart; Or she thought she was a queen, unique and special, so she renamed Songshan.
In 696 ad, Wang Zhen, the king of Yue (whose jurisdiction is now Runan, Henan Province), and Wang Chong, the son of King Langya, the governor of Bozhou (whose jurisdiction is now Jimo, Shandong Province), rebelled against the Wu family. Wu Zetian sent envoys to mount song to pay homage to her before the military expedition. She found that there was a temple of Xia Qi and her mother Tu Shan in Mount Song, and an aunt Temple of her mother and sister in Mount Shaoshi, also known as “Shaoyi Temple”. Wu Zetian named Xia Qi’s mother “Empress Dowager Yujing” and his aunt Mrs. Jin que.
This ceremony is actually equivalent to Jiang Ziya’s deity in the romance of gods. Since then, “aunt” has become an officially certified fairy, enjoying the incense of the world, and has been respected by the people for thousands of years.
03 “aunts” everywhere
From the Wei, Jin, southern and Northern Dynasties to the Tang, song, yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, “aunt” has always been the exclusive title of “aunt”. Not now in preschool English, there is “mother’s sister is called” aunt “. Bai Juyi in the Tang Dynasty “Pipa line” has “my brother went to join the army and my aunt died”, and Yuan Haowen in the Yuan Dynasty “aunt Longxi Jun taboo three songs on the day” has: “bamboo horse Qingshan little Lang, aunt huaixiu Auntie Xiang”, here all refer to the mother’s biological sister, the kind of blood relationship.
This custom has been used until the Republic of China. “Aunt” began to generalize, which should have happened in the 1950s and 1960s. At first, there was a place in the folk to call her mother-in-law aunt. Later, as long as female elders who were the same age as her mother were all called aunts, they were confused with their biological aunts.
However, there is no way to do this. In ancient times, people’s social circle was relatively narrow, and they basically had contacts with relatives who were related by blood, and there was no such intimacy between neighbors. Older women generally call them “eldest sister”, “aunt” and “grandma”, and they won’t mix with relatives’ names at all. For example, in Northeast China, a “big sister” can fight the world. Basically, women aged from twoorthree to twenty or thirty can do it.
With the development of society, people’s scope of communication begins to expand, and more and more people are contacted. It is inevitable that there will be an embarrassing situation of “too many elders, and not enough titles”. For example, some cities are developing too fast, and many new roads are too late to be named. Simply call them “science and technology road 1” and “science and technology road 2” until “science and technology road 18”.
There are too many people to contact, and the elders can’t call their names directly, nor can they shout “Hey” or “hello”, which is easy to be beaten. Therefore, referring to the existing title for relatives, corresponding to the corresponding age, temporary cramming, slowly become a convention, and it is not surprising that “aunts fly all over the sky”.
