Emperor Guangwu Liuxiu
No one forced him, including his father Liuxiu; No one hinted at him, including his brother Liuzhuang; It was entirely out of his original intention that he voluntarily abdicated the crown prince. This man was later King Gong of the East China Sea and the crown prince Liu Qiang of Guangwu emperor of the East Han Dynasty. In the book of the later Han Dynasty, it was evaluated as “being modest and yielding, but actually being respectful to the king”. Compared with the later Prince lichengqi, his “letting” is even more incredible. He was fully qualified to be the second generation emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The funeral service after his death was close to
emperor
But the frugality of the funeral is the same as that of the common people. For various reasons, it is unimaginable.
In AD 58, the second year after the death of Liuxiu, Emperor Guangwu, Liu Qiang, the “king of the East China Sea” of the Eastern Han Dynasty, died of illness at the age of 34. Before his death, Liu Qiang wrote a letter to his brother Liuzhuang, Emperor Ming of Han Dynasty. It made people cry and have angina pectoris.
I received the favor of my father and brothers, and got the fiefs of the two countries, as well as the palace rites and music beyond the ritual system. What you’ve done makes my life unrequitable. Because I didn’t take care of my health, I fell ill all the year round, which worried the Empress Dowager and the emperor. I frequently sent imperial doctors to see me. I wanted to express my gratitude in words, but all the words seemed so weak. I am ashamed. After my death, please take care of my children and find a good husband for my daughters. Now that his father has passed away, the emperor must be more willing to be filial to his mother and satisfy her in food, drink and daily life. In addition, say goodbye to other brothers, and never see each other again.
Emperor Ming of the Han Dynasty and his mother yinlihua burst into tears after reading the letter. He lost a good brother. If he hadn’t given up the crown prince to him, how could he be today?!
He held back his grief and ordered the emperor’s guard of honor to hold a grand funeral for Liu Qiang. He went out with the Empress Dowager of Luoyang to pay his respects. He also sent Sikong to preside over Liu Qiang’s funeral. And asked all kings, princesses, relatives and princes to participate. What Liu Zhuang has done may be regarded as a reward and reward for his brother’s comity to the crown prince.
Emperor Ming of the Han Dynasty knew this brother too well. He was modest, thrifty and cautious in everything. Therefore, while the emperor’s gift was used to administer Liu Qiang’s funeral, a special imperial edict forbids heavy burial. It is required that all objects buried with him should be thrifty, so as to show Liu Qiang’s ambition to walk alone.
Therefore, the tomb of Liu Qiang was excavated
Tomb robbing
They were so angry that they wanted to scold their mothers, because there was no difference between the burial objects inside and those of ordinary people after they died.
Liu Qiang’s moral character and his actions in managing the East China Sea had a far-reaching impact on the imperial family of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and several generations of emperors missed him very much. Later, Emperor Zhang of Han Dynasty and Emperor Han’an both went to Lucheng, where Liu Qiang’s mausoleum was located, to offer sacrifices to the ancestor who had always lived in their hearts. Especially in Liuzhuang, the emperor of Ming Dynasty, the words and behaviors of his eldest brother Liu Qiang always haunt his mind. Five years after Liu Qiang’s death, the Ming emperor lived in Lucheng for more than a month to show his nostalgia for his brother. Nine years later, the Ming emperor ordered the Marquis of Guangling and his three younger brothers to go to the tomb of Lucheng to offer sacrifices to his brother.
If we carefully read the history of the king of the East China Sea, we will find that the reason why the Ming emperor posthumously took the title of King Gong of the East China Sea after Liu Qiang’s death lies in Liu Qiang’s appointment as Prince and his achievements in governing the East China Sea. In Liu Qiang’s suicide note, he said that he was ashamed to be sealed by the two countries. The two countries are Donghai and Lujun, two counties and twenty-nine counties in total. The tax income is several times that of other vassal states. The largest vassal state in the Eastern Han Dynasty is Donghai, and its capital is Lu County, where Liu Qiang’s mausoleum is located. At first, the Ming emperor Liu Zhuang was granted the title of king of the East China Sea, but Liu Xiu did not give him Lu Jun. Therefore, the real king of the East China Sea, the first East China Sea King with two counties and 29 counties, is Liu Qiang.
Liu Qiang was modest and frugal in nature. In addition, his father’s over love for him led him to pay money and money to the imperial court to help the country. He thought and contributed to the imperial court to fulfill the responsibility of Pingfan. He is only doing his best to help the imperial court, and Liu Xiu is even more upset to see that he has made such contributions to the imperial court. As a result, his reward became heavier and heavier. It is for this reason that Liu Qiang always feels that his father dotes on him too much. On more than one occasion, he asked his father to take care of his other brothers, but Liuxiu felt sorry for the Donghai king who gave up the crown prince. Both father and son tried hard to put themselves in each other’s shoes and do their best for each other.
The death of Liu Qiang was the loss of a very good brother for the Emperor Ming of the Han Dynasty, a very filial son for the empress dowager, and a very excellent vassal for the Eastern Han Dynasty.
Before the glory of Liu Qiang’s death faded, his adopted son Liu Zheng succeeded to the throne. This unfilial son was far inferior to his father. His behavior in the East China Sea was called “lust and immorality” in historical books. At the funeral of his uncle, the king of the mountains, Liu Yan, this punk took Liu Yan’s concubine, Princess Xu, as his own. In the face of his father, the Ming emperor only cut him off as a punishment.
Only because there is a mother
In 25 A.D., Liu Xiu revived the Han Dynasty, and his regime was called the Eastern Han Dynasty in history. In the same year, Liu Xiu’s wife guoshengtong gave birth to a son, who was later liuqiang, the king of the East China Sea. The descendants of Liuxiu’s career had two bumper harvests and were delighted. The next year, guoshengtong was established as
queen
And made the child crown prince. Liu Qiang inherited the wisdom and kindness of his father Liu Xiu from the time he was sensible. Although Liu Xiu was also the founding emperor, after he ascended the throne, he did not slaughter meritorious officials like other emperors, but gave them a happy ending that had never been seen in history.
After making Liu Qiang the crown prince, he invited many Confucian masters to educate the crown prince, and often asked Liu Qiang some simple questions about governing the country. Liu Qiang’s answers were very satisfactory to him. What satisfied him most was the gentleness, courtesy and frugality embodied in the prince.
Originally, all this would develop smoothly and happily. It is likely that after his death, Liu Qiang will inherit the throne and continue to create the great cause of the “gentle” empire of the Eastern Han Dynasty. However, the appearance of Yin Lihua broke all these wishes.
In 23 A.D., Liu Xiu realized two wishes of his life: an official should be the golden ruler and a wife should be Yin Lihua. In fact, Liu Xiu in 23 A.D. was close to the emperor, and his love for Yin Lihua was growing day by day. At that time, guoshengtong was occasionally dissatisfied, but because Liu Xiu was not the son of heaven and she was not the queen, although he took Liu Xiu’s love for Yin Lihua to heart, he could not find a reason to vent. It is common for men to have three wives and four concubines. Moreover, no matter how much Liu Xiu dotes on Yin Lihua, what he can give Yin Lihua is actually what she can get.
But after 25 ad, the situation changed. As the queen, she has the noble capital of her mother’s world. When she doesn’t have this noble capital, she can still achieve psychological balance for Liu Xiu’s behavior of doting on Yin Lihua. But when she had this capital, she was afraid of losing it, and her psychology would not be balanced.
People are often like this. Having one thing is often much more painstaking than not having one thing. Guoshengtong is such a person. She knows how her queen came from. If Yin Lihua had not given birth to a son, if she had not given birth to Liu Qiang, how could the queen fall on her own head?!
Liu Qiang began to live in the East China Sea again. His uncle Guo always persuaded him that this was a gift from the emperor and should be enjoyed. Liu Qiang doesn’t think so. He thinks he has no virtue and incompetence, but he has such a big fief. What do other brothers think? It’s OK for other brothers to figure it out. If a brother has one mind and tells his father about this idea, he will not shake his father’s heart once. Twice or ten times, his father will certainly take back his fief. It’s better not to take it back now than to take it back later.
Liu Qiang’s mental illness is starting to attack again. If we give the most important things in our life to others according to the ideas of normal people, we will have the fun of giving alms. Of course, this kind of fun is utilitarian. Because in our normal eyes, he will be grateful. We will accept the things given by this person with peace of mind.
According to common people, the reason why Liu Qiang let the crown prince and the king of Donghai was that the court struggle was too fierce at that time, and he would be ruined if he didn’t pay attention to it. Besides, his mother, empress Guo, was always making trouble because her uncle Liu Yang rebelled and was killed by Liu Xiu. Because she had no backing, Miss Guo felt her own crisis. In fact, no one gave her a crisis, and it was she who created it. As a fellow countryman of Liu Xiu, Yin Lihua must have great influence in the court, and she is still very strong. But what does that prove? Because of her great power, she must strive to be queen? This is the same kind of bullshit as “you have to drink because you sell wine”.
In that case, the problem lies with Liu Qiang himself. The reason why he had such a problem was simply because he had been influenced by many poor ministers who had read several books on the history of court struggle. When he was the prince, a minister told him, “Crown prince, you have been sitting in a dangerous position for a long time. It is also a position that makes the emperor feel painful and difficult to understand. It not only violates filial piety, but also has many murders in fact. There are many examples in history. The emperor is a wise emperor, and the son is a filial son through the ages. However, because of the small matter of Zhima mungbean, you turned against each other. Spring and Autumn Annals” Li, especially pointed out that the son is valued by the mother. For your own interests, it is better to resign from the crown prince and escape from the nest of right and wrong. “
Liu Qiang learned from his mother that the court must have a struggle, a struggle to fight, and a struggle to create a struggle without a struggle. There was also the influence of those ministers who thought they had read history and gained experience. He also thoroughly believed that there would always be struggles in the world, especially the closer they were to the emperor, the more fierce the struggle would be. But he seems to have forgotten one thing. Liu Xiu is not only the emperor, but also his biological father.
Why must Liu Qiang imagine his position as hell instead of heaven?!
Liu Xiu died in 57 A.D., five years after Liu Qiang managed the East China Sea. In this year, Liu Xiu’s unfilial son, King Liu Jing of Shanyang, wrote an anonymous letter. This anonymous letter was written to Liu Qiang in the tone of Da Hong Lu Guo Kuang. When Liu Jing asked his servant to give this letter to Liu Qiang, Liu Qiang almost fainted after reading the letter.
The general content of the letter is that Liu Qiang was dismissed as the crown prince because of his innocence, and his mother empress Guo was also deposed and humiliated, urging Liu Qiang to return to the East and start fighting to seize the world. He also said, “when Emperor Gaozu started his army, he was just a pavilion leader. His majesty has made a great career in Baishui village. Besides, as his eldest son and former crown prince, you should be the frost of autumn and kill all things. Don’t be a sheep in a pen and be slaughtered. The emperor died, and the people still want to be robbers and are ready to plot, not to mention the king!”
Before he fainted, Liu Qiang captured Liu Jing’s servant, who was pretending to be a messenger. He sealed the original envelope and rushed it to Liuzhuang, the capital’s Ming emperor. Under torture, the Ming emperor knew that Liu Jing had done it. But remembering that he was his mother and brother, he kept the matter a secret and ordered Liu Jing to leave the capital and move to the Henan palace.
Liu Qiang’s starting point in this matter is not to stabilize the Han Dynasty, but to avoid suspicion under panic. After this incident, Liu Qiang went up again and asked the second emperor to give up Lu County in Donghai. Liu Zhuang refused, and Yin Lihua refused.
In the first five years of Liu Qiang’s stay in donghaiguo, it seemed that he did not have anything particularly important to contact the imperial court, but only let the donghaiguo. Although this “let” hit the wall and bounced back like a bouncing ball, Liu Qiang still struggled to keep throwing balls at the wall.
When Liu Qiang arrived in the East China and found that Lu Jun was included in his jurisdiction, he began to panic again. He wrote letters to Liu Xiu one after another, thinking that he only had the East China Sea and did not need Lu Jun. Liu Xiu refused, resolutely refused. For this Confucian emperor, his son is very sorry for not becoming the future emperor. Then compensation must be made elsewhere.

In fact, in his fourth year in the East China Sea, his body had already collapsed. Liu Xiu and later Liu Zhuang repeatedly sent imperial doctors to treat their diseases, but the effect was poor. In fact, he has a heart disease, and naturally needs heart medicine to cure it. But the imperial doctors simply did not understand how a king of the East China Sea who was second only to the emperor in enjoyment could have a heart attack. His health has gone from bad to worse because of the aggravation of his mental illness. When he learned that his father had died, he was even more terrified. It was history that told him that his younger brother, who had become an emperor through his own success, would certainly do something about himself.
Especially after the anonymous letter incident of liujingzao, he was even more afraid and almost came to the brink of collapse. He almost used this sentence to himself. He desperately wanted Liu Zhuang to believe in himself, but his mind was like hitting a sponge with a heavy fist. Because this sponge has no offensive power at all, let alone the intention to attack.
But he is still thinking about his future and how to avoid everything he should not have. It was not until his death that he gave up the idea completely. When the physical disease took his life, his psychological disease somehow recovered. In his will, he hoped that the emperor would make his three children king. This is simply an incredible thing. According to common sense, this kind of thing can’t happen at all. But it happened to Liu Qiang, and it happened so naturally. Liu Qiang was also at ease.
Therefore, we say that since Liu Qiang abdicated the crown prince, it can even be said that when he was about to abdicate the crown prince, he had suffered from a very serious mental disease, and was doomed to die of this disease.
Such a person, with such a poor psychological endurance, seems not qualified to be an emperor. But on the other hand, if his mother guoshengtong had not been abolished, his understanding of the ugly side of history and the influence of his ministers, he would certainly not have gone to the year 58. Character decides fate, but at the same time, reading too many books is not a good thing.
There are too many incorrect facts in the book. Although history has been repeating since ancient times, there are no universally applicable historical lessons and experiences. The period of Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty is the best refutation.
Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty, without the struggle between the court and the crown prince, had a case of Liu Qiang letting the crown prince, which was puzzling and made some people feel that everything was reasonable. People with this idea also suffer from the mental illness of Liu Qiang, and regard the general law as the general law that must happen.
The death of Liu Qiang illustrates a problem: no one can escape the influence of history, including the future quasi emperor – the prince.
From ad 25 to ad 28, guoshengtong lived in his heart. She was worried that Yin Lihua would one day take her place. In fact, Liu Xiu wanted to make Yin Lihua queen long before she was made queen, but Yin Lihua refused because she had no children. Empress Guo’s worry finally grew a little in AD 28. That year, Liu Xiu took Yin Lihua to denounce Peng Chong. In the accounts of the Chinese army, Yin Lihua gave birth to a boy, who was later Liuzhuang, the emperor of the Han and Ming Dynasties.
As the years passed, the two children grew up day by day. After Liu Zhuang was granted the title of king of the East China Sea, and Liu Qiang continued to be his crown prince. Guoshengtong began to panic. Of course, her panic was not without cause. Although Liu Xiu still dotes on Liu Qiang, the queen thinks something will happen sooner or later, because Liu Xiu dotes on Liu Zhuang more than anything else. Moreover, Liu Qiang is not as good as Liu Zhuang. That is, although her mother is the queen, she is not loved.
No matter how wise and great the emperor is, the palace will inevitably become a place of right and wrong. Empress Guo’s worry is not unreasonable, and she has to show it in front of Liu Xiu all the time, but the way of expression is almost stupid. She thinks that the emperor does not spoil himself. Of course, this is not the most important thing. She thinks that if the emperor does not spoil himself, it will affect Liu Qiang’s crown prince. Once Liu Qiang’s crown prince is not guaranteed, let alone the queen. She has repeatedly been naughty in front of Liu Xiu and slandered Yin Lihua.
Yin Lihua, who knows a lot, moved to a palace outside Luoyang to settle this family conflict. However, this move did not calm guoshengtong down. Instead, she felt that Yin Lihua was acting for Liu Xiu to win her sympathy. She vented her anger on other concubines, which really made Liu Xiu have the heart to abandon her. However, Emperor Guangwu Liu Xiu did not do so. He just forbeared as much as possible. This is true of liuxiuyue. Guoshengtong felt that Liuxiu had done something wrong. Later, guoshengtong almost went crazy and had a very bad attitude towards Liuxiu’s children other than Liu Qiang. Even when these children saw her, they were like mice seeing cats. Liu Xiu felt that she had put up with it to the end. Finally, on October 19, ad 41, An imperial edict was issued: “Empress guoshengtong is always full of bitter hatred. She often goes against my will and cannot be kind to children who are not born to her. Anyone who sees her in the court is like seeing an eagle. Today, she is no longer qualified to be a mother of the world. Yin Lihua, a noble woman in the countryside, married me when I was a civilian. Now we haven’t seen her for three years because of her bad performance noodles. Her character is good enough for the world. For me and the new queen, it is the misfortune of life and family, not the blessing of the country. No one is allowed to write a congratulatory letter. “
If the historical records are correct, then we can draw such an evaluation about guoshengtong: he has suffered from a very serious psychological disease. It is mainly manifested in making things out of nothing, fear and irritability, so that they can not think normally.
We can see that from her 25 years of being queen to her 41 years of being abolished, she has been in the position of queen for 16 years. During these 16 years, she has been making troubles for Liu Xiu all the time and venting her resentment to others. A slightly more normal person should understand that if someone used 16 years to create difficulties and censure for you, and always put a donkey’s face in front of you, what would your mood be like? Not to mention the emperor, the Lord of the world who has the power of life and death.
After she was abandoned, Yin Lihua and liuxiuzong felt sorry for her. In fact, there is another meaning behind this kind of sorry, that is, Prince Liu Qiang. In a society where mother values her son, the next step for a mother to be demoted is for her son to be deposed. But liuxiushi couldn’t find any reason to depose the prince and set up Liu Zhuang, the son of the Yin queen.
Besides, he never thought of doing so. None of the ministers in the court flattered the queen and asked to change the crown prince. Everything seemed so calm, as if there was no abandonment at all, as if Liu Qiang had a queen’s mother sitting next to Liu Xiu. But the silence was finally broken. It was Liu Qiang who broke it.
Now let’s analyze why Liu Qiang must resign as crown prince. We also feel a little puzzled. Just like his mother, she had nothing to do, but she had to find something to make trouble, and finally she overturned her car.
According to historical records, after guoshengtong was deposed, Liu Qiang was always restless. He always felt that his father’s next step was to depose himself. He inherited his father’s wisdom and kindness, but he also inherited his mother’s nervousness. In his panic, he accepted the suggestion of a close confidant and resigned as Prince.
After hearing the news, Liu Xiu felt even more uneasy. After Guo Shengtong was forced to abolish, in order to comfort the Guo family, he has done his utmost. First, he made many men in the Guo family marquees, then promoted Guo Shengtong’s second son Liufu to the king of the mountains, and renamed Guo Shengtong the “Empress Dowager of the mountains” to live with Liu Fu, making Guo Shengtong the only empress dowager in Chinese history who won respect without going to the cold palace.
All that Liu Xiu did was to reassure the crown prince Liu Qiang and tell him that although I abandoned your mother, I gave her the same honor as the queen. This shows that I still miss her. What’s more, it has nothing to do with you. But Liu Qiang doesn’t think so. He mistakenly thinks that if his mother is finished, his own will be finished sooner or later. It’s better to retire early, or you can save your father a lot of things.
Liuxiujian will never grant Liu Qiang’s request. And through various ways and channels to comfort him, do your crown prince, don’t worry about anything.
It is not easy for an emperor to say so. But Liu Qiang didn’t understand his father’s intentions. Since his mother left the capital, he had no idea. With the advice of many stupid people who like to watch history around him, Liu Qiang believes that he is now in a “doubtful position” and will either continue to live in a desperate situation or retreat in a hurry and get out of the way.
Again and again, he was scattered on the ground and asked his father to pass on the crown prince to Liuzhuang, who was then the king of the East China Sea. Liu Xiu is just two words: No.
At this time, Liu Qiang had already regarded the crown prince as an explosive bag and had to throw it out immediately. He told the officials around him and his ten younger brothers that he wanted to be a foreign vassal Prince very much. He kept talking and talking. To be frank, Liu Xiu and Yin Lihua agreed to his request when they felt that if they did not agree with his request, he would probably commit suicide.
Two years after guoshengtong was abolished, in 43 A.D., Liu Xiu ordered that Liu Qiang be renamed king of the East China Sea and the former king of the East China Sea Liuzhuang be the crown prince. But Liu Qiang, the king of the East China Sea, must stay in the capital to comfort his father’s old heart.
Liu Qiang finally breathed a sigh of relief and finally threw out his so-called explosive bag. In this year, Liu Xiu continued to “repent” and compensate the mother and son: he sent Liu Fu, the king of the mountains, to Peidi as king, and changed guoshengtong into empress dowager Pei.
After nine years in the capital, Liu Qiang is finally ready to take office in Donghai. In order to better enable his son to work in the East China Sea without any trouble, the post of Donghai state minister was handed over to Liu Qiang’s uncle Guo Jing. When Liu Qiang was leaving, Liu Xiu made a decree that Liu Qiang’s chariots, horses, honor guards and palace furnishings should be of the same scale and grade as his own, in order to make up for Liu Qiang’s regret that he failed to become emperor. Liu Qiang was still in fear. He refused in every way but failed to get Liu Xiu’s consent before he went to the East China Sea with such a guard of honor.
When we read history here, we saw such a mother and son. First, the mother. When the dust from the feudal courts of previous dynasties fell on her head and gave her a deep understanding of the word “struggle”, although there was no struggle at all, she believed that the struggle had spread. She mistakenly took her “self belief” as a fact and was engaged in a man’s absurd battle. In the end, she was defeated by the struggle without rivals. Guoshengtong’s abolishment was actually caused by her sensitive nerves and the shadow left by the struggle of the imperial court in previous dynasties.
Then there was his son, who also saw a nonexistent struggle as an imminent battle. He inherited the sensitive nerve line from his mother, and then continued to play and perform incisively and vividly. His position is fundamentally firm and indestructible, but he is a shadow of a bow and a snake, and all grass and trees are soldiers. His abdication was the most praiseworthy in the eyes of later generations, but at that time, perhaps only in the eyes of Liu Xiu, it was a plastic talent. The loveliness of Liu Qiang lies in that he is not unable to withstand the blow, but that he is no longer qualified to withstand the blow.
