Monk Tang’s scriptures come from the novel Journey to the West written by Wu Chengen. According to the book, Tang Monk’s secular name is Chen Yi, and he also has a nickname, Jiang liuer. Tang monk was also the righteous younger brother of Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty. At that time, he was an eminent monk with high Buddhist attainments. Tang Monk had a high understanding of Buddhism. Later, in order to spread Buddhism, he decided to learn sutras from the west, learn Dacheng Buddhism, and popularize all living beings.
Later, Tang Monk took three disciples to the west to learn sutras, and it was difficult to get the sutras back to the Tang Dynasty after going through ninety-nine eighty-one difficulties. How many years has it taken monk Tang to learn scriptures? According to “journey to the west”, it took Tang Monk 14 years to learn scriptures. In the 13th year of Zhenguan, Tang monk was enlightened by Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. After receiving two treasures from Avalokitesvara, Jinlian cassock and nine ring tin staff, he said goodbye to Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty and went to the west to learn scriptures.
There are many difficulties on the way to get scriptures, and all kinds of disasters emerge in endlessly. Under the guidance of Avalokitesvara, Tang Monk accepted the stone monkey Sunwukong as his disciple, who has no father and no mother but has great powers. Monkey King’s magic power is strong, but he is stubborn. He disobeyed discipline and killed a group of robbers to rob. Tang monk was angry with Monkey King’s ferocity and recklessness and wanted to drive him away. Unexpectedly, it aroused the ferocity of the monkey. GuanShiYin rushed to save Tang monk in time. Later, GuanShiYin taught Tang monk a tight hoop spell to discipline the monkey.
Under the effect of the hoop mantra, the Monkey King became much more calm. Then monk Tang received two apprentices, Zhu Bajie, and three apprentices, Sha Wujing. The four masters and disciples learned from the West together. The journey is dangerous. Although there are three apprentices, all the goblins on the road want to eat Tang Monk’s meat, because it is said that eating Tang Monk’s meat can lead to immortality. So monk Tang was often caught by monsters on the way to get scriptures. Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Seng try their best to save Tang Seng from the monster every time. It took Tang Monk 14 years and countless disasters to arrive at Leiyin temple. The feelings of the four masters and disciples became deeper and deeper. After taking the peerless Sutra, they returned to the Tang Dynasty to help all sentient beings.
