In China’s traditional culture, Buddhism and Taoism, as religions that have existed in China for thousands of years at the same time, both of their thoughts and doctrines are encouraging people to be good, and they learn from each other and integrate in the process of development. There are many gods worshipped by Buddhism and Taoism, such as emperor Huaguang, which is called Huaguang Buddha and Huaguang Heavenly King Buddha in Buddhism, and is commonly known as Wugong Bodhisattva in the folk; Taoism calls them Marshal Ma and Tianjun Ma, the gods of the thunder and fire departments of Taoism, and one of the Four Saints of Taoism. The Buddhist Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and the Taoist Tzu hang Taoist are both dignified and merciful women; The image of Moli Zhitian, the protection god of Buddhism for disaster elimination, is also very similar to that of doum Yuanjun, the mother of stars in Taoism.

There are also many differences between Taoism and Buddhism, the most obvious of which is the difference in the way of practice. The goal of Buddhist practice is to get rid of Nirvana and the suffering of life and death. Through the efforts of this life, you can get blessings in the afterlife and get away from all the free and unimpeded state of greed, anger and delusion. Taoism takes the pursuit of “immortality and noble life” as its cultivation goal, hoping to achieve longevity through various cultivation methods. Since Taoism takes “this life” as the purpose of practice, is there a saying of “reincarnation” in Taoism?

“Three lifetimes cause and effect, six reincarnation” is a very important theory of Buddhism, “three lifetimes” refers to the past, present and future, “six Tao” refers to the heaven, Asura, humanity, animal, hungry ghost and hell. It aims at persuading people to be good, pointing out that people’s good and evil deeds will produce different consequences, and based on this, it is either because the great good joins the reincarnation of heaven, or because the great evil joins the hell. “Reincarnation” refers to the continuous life and death and karma of all living beings, just like the wheel, which circulates back and forth.

In fact, at the beginning of the birth of Taoism, there was no saying of “reincarnation”, and there was a conflict between Taoism’s “Immortality” and “reincarnation”. Kou Qianzhi, a famous Taoist in the Northern Wei Dynasty, reformed the Tianshi Dao founded by the founder Zhang Daoling, and combined the Taoist idea of cultivating immortality with the Buddhist idea of reincarnation. He believed that the good and evil in the previous life also had an impact on the practice in this life, and the good and evil in this life would affect the afterlife. Kou Qianzhi proposed that cultivating immortality is not only through refining pills, but also through accumulating merits.

After founder Wang Chongyang founded the Quanzhen sect, he put forward the idea of “Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are interlinked, and the three religions have always been one ancestor”, which integrates many thoughts and doctrines of Buddhism. We can see many theories about “reincarnation” in Neidan’s classic book “Ecclesiastes of Zhong Lu”, such as

Therefore, there are differences in the next life, and there are length of life. Both birth and death, both destruction and rebirth. If you don’t realize and fall all over the world, you will lose yourself in different kinds and penetrate the soul in other shells. The root of truth is no longer in people, and there is no liberation by virtue of samsara.

Another example is

If you want to avoid reincarnation in life, you should not enter into a different body. Taste it to make it free from disease, aging, death, and bitterness, stand upright, and be a man with negative Yin and Yang. Don’t be a ghost. Cultivate immortals among people and rise to heaven among immortals.

Taoism takes this as the level of cultivation level, and points out that there are five levels of cultivation into immortals, that is, “immortals have five levels, ranging from ghost immortals, human immortals, earth immortals, immortals, and celestial immortals, are all immortals”.

So what does “five Samsara” mean? According to the Taoist classic “taishanglaojun nothingness natural origin Sutra”:

One, God is God; In the two ways, God enters the flesh and blood and becomes a human God; Three ways, God into the beast for the beast God; Four ways, God into Ficus pumila, hungry ghost name also; Five ways, God into the mud Li, hell name also, God guilty of entering the mud Li high school entrance examination.

Compared with the “six Daos” of Buddhism, the “five Daos” of Taoism is less than the “Asura Dao”. Taoism believes that only “those who keep nothingness” can get the Tao of nature and often exist in the world; The “guardian of God” can practice his flesh and blood to become a real person, a heavenly official, and fly to heaven; “Those who keep Qi” can rise and become immortals.

Although Taoism also has the theory of “reincarnation”, Taoism still takes “immortals value life, and there is no measure of people” as the foundation of practice. The practice of this life is more important than that of the previous life or the next life.
