Shocked, he still insisted on holding several meetings. He took Li Xiang’s “talk about Zuo Hui in detail – do something difficult and correct” home and read it again in the evening. I bought this book as soon as it came out. Please read it carefully. I believe this will be the edification and baptism of their valuable values.
I have the honor to meet Mr. Zuohui several times. There were several telephone conferences in which he participated. The last time I saw him was at the listing ceremony of shell. The last wechat exchange was when I sent him a translation of the 2021 US strategic competition act on April 22. His circle of friends was fixed on April 4 and 23, on the occasion of the third anniversary of the founding of shell.
Listen to him patiently explain the industry and introduce what he has been doing all the time, from chain home to shell, from freedom to vision. We can answer a question for 20 minutes, but our words are modest, sincere and simple without any airs. What he said is not only his deep insight into the industry, society, the world and people, but also his preciseness and seriousness in details and technology. The most impressive thing is not his grasp of the pattern and details, but his sincere and profound values that can be perceived all the time. His sense of value is so full that it overflows all the time and infects the people around him.
I have never seen such an entrepreneur.
Mr. Zuohui is an entrepreneur at first, but he has long been divorced from the entrepreneur in the general sense. He is a business practitioner, thinker, a person with feelings and love, and a humanist.
After reading Li Xiang’s book “talking about Zuo Hui in detail – doing difficult and correct things”, many small details are worth tasting, which shows Mr. Zuo Hui’s personality.
A humanist with sociologist’s perspective

Li Xiang:
I heard you say something before. One of your store managers knelt down when someone came to the store to make trouble. Then the problem was solved, and you were very angry when you heard about it.
Zuohui:
I was not angry at that time, but thought it was a very surprising way to deal with it. It was a situation I had never thought of. Before, I knew that everyone’s living environment was different, but after that, I knew more clearly that our service group might be a more complex group than I thought.
I have always felt that I am a more empathetic person. Although my own living environment is relatively simple, which is the usual sequence of growth environment in China, I know that Chinese people have all kinds of complex situations, and I can understand all kinds of people. But it was much more than I expected. I thought, what can service providers get in the organization?
… I think that maybe the agent could solve this problem by kneeling down at that time, but after 5 or 10 years, when he recalled this experience, he was certainly not very comfortable. If the organization can have more responsibilities and help people learn to get along with the society, employees can live better.
Li Xiang:
Have you done anything deliberately to promote this? Is to ask them not to do this again.
Zuohui:
No, Because we think that when you see one thing after the organization is large, you must know that there must be thousands of similar things happening every day, such as onehundred, onethousand and tenthousand, that is, people don’t have enough sense of dignity. First, his self-esteem is not enough; Second, he didn’t get enough self-esteem. If the problem cannot be fundamentally solved, it is meaningless to say that you are not allowed to do this thing or that thing.
After reading the above dialogue:
1? Zuo Hui pulled away very much. He would immediately jump out and look at the matter from a farther and higher angle. This ability to jump out of the box is something few people can have. Most people will be brought into that scene and emotion. (there are also several similar dialogues in the book. Mr. Zuohui doesn’t think he is an entrepreneur, has no “home court consciousness”, and consciously feels that he needs to maintain objectivity, etc.)
2? His perspective is very unique: he is observing the choices faced by employees in such situations. He is trying to understand their behavior through their family background and growth environment, and contextualize their behavior. Finally, his judgment was that he underestimated the complexity of the employees’ environment: he did not know them well enough. This observation was sociological. We say that this should be the angle that an intellectual with humanistic feelings should have.
3? He has great empathy – he sympathizes with the store manager’s situation, and even thinks about the store manager’s feeling when recalling this scene five or 10 years later. Ordinary people do not think like this. This can no longer be simply summed up with empathy or whose responsibility: what Mr. Zuohui has is a great humanistic care and a humanistic spirit. He respects and loves the people who struggle in this industry. He hoped that they would lead a better life and be able to pursue their careers with more dignity after hard work.
4? He has a strong sense of introspection and responsibility: he immediately thought: what should the organization do? What can be done? What should I do? What can be done? How to improve the situation of employees? How to change their relationship with consumers / customers and society? This will not only benefit customers, employees, enterprises and industries, but also benefit the society and even the country.
5? He also has penetrating diagnostic power – everything is about dignity and the ability to create value. Only by creating value can we gain respect. Only by truly following the long-term values can we gain the respect of customers.
To change all this, we need to “persist in doing difficult and correct” things.

Dissemination of ideas
It is said that Zuo Hui has transformed an industry (and is transforming several enterprise industries, such as personal home decoration industry) with his own efforts. But what is more valuable to the society is the spread of ideas and values. What he brings is not only subversive thinking about service concept and business model (although today we are talking about “vertical to platform”, bpaas, industrial Internet and “shell” all the time), but also deeper thinking about business ethics, social philosophy and human philosophy.
China is moving from speed and scale to quality. In the future, values will become increasingly important. No matter the government, enterprises, institutions or individuals, only by respecting and practicing values can they be respected and can they achieve stability and long-term development. Mr. Zuohui is the representative of a new generation of values in the changing times. He said and did what we expected but could not do.
He is a pioneer. The long-term doctrine that he advocated and practiced – “doing difficult and correct things” was certainly ahead of the times at the beginning and not understood by people. Even if people are willing to believe it, they dare not practice it, because they have no courage: the potential cost is too high. However, in 2021, when he left us, his belief and pursuit of long-term ism is becoming our consensus and correctness.
This is the result of years of efforts by Mr. Zuohui and his team. Almost on his own, he did for us what we had always hoped for, dreamed of and dared not practice – difficult and correct things.

The great business success of Mr. Zuohui / shell (as well as the achievements of freedom and vision without landing in the capital market) shows people the power of long-term ism and makes people believe that this value can indeed bring success. This provides a huge positive incentive to drive people to pursue and practice such values more firmly.

Therefore, Mr. Zuohui’s greatest value to the society is no longer the change to the real estate brokerage industry. It is the spread of a business idea and way of doing things with strong values orientation and strong humanistic feelings: long-term doctrine wins, values win.
We all feel sorry and sad for Mr. Zuohui’s untimely death. He still has many visions and dreams for China’s housing industry, and has so many unfinished businesses. The shell is just the beginning, “too small”, and he will never see the exciting future of the industry.
However, when you leave at the highlight moment, there will be some unexpected results. He is “out of the circle”, divorced from the real estate industry and the capital circle, and has attracted the attention of a wider community and people. He may even become a new generation of business Idol (“China’s jobs”). This will help him spread his business philosophy and values more widely. The ideas and values put forward by Mr. Zuohui can become an important material for our business ethics education in the future.
