The story of Shennong distinguishing herbs and tasting herbs is a famous ancient Chinese myth. Shennong was one of the three emperors. He was born in a cave in the burning mountain. It is said that he was a man with a cow head. Because of his special appearance, diligence and bravery, he was promoted as a tribal leader when he grew up. Because his tribe lives in the hot south, it is called Yan nationality, so people call him Yan Emperor. On one occasion, he saw birds holding seeds and invented grain agriculture. Because of these outstanding contributions, people also call him Shennong. When he saw people getting sick, he went to daguangye to build a tree and went to the Tiandi garden to get Yao grass. When the Tiandi gave him a divine whip, Shennong took the whip all the way from duguangye to the burning mountain. Shennong has been poisoned by hundreds of herbs for many times, thanks to tea detoxification. Because I vowed to taste all the grass, and finally died because I tasted the heartbroken grass. In order to commemorate his kindness and achievements, people regarded him as the God of the king of medicine, and built a temple of the king of medicine to offer sacrifices at four seasons. At the junction of Sichuan, Hubei and Shaanxi in China, it is said that Shennongjia mountain is the place where Shennong tastes all kinds of grass.
After Nuwa mended the sky, I don’t know how long it took. In a cave in the Lieshan mountain (there is another saying that Shennong was born in Jiangshui, which is now in Baoji, which is why there is a dispute about whether Emperor Yan and Shennong are one person. It should be that they were confused when they were deified, and Mr. Yuan Ke listed them as one person; according to this, Shennong was also called Lieshan in the book of rites, because of his multiple names), and a child was born. It is strange to say that when he was just born, nine wells naturally emerged around the cave. The water in these nine wells was connected to each other. If the water in one of them was taken, the other eight eyes would fluctuate. This child is born with a strange appearance. His body is transparent, his viscera are clearly visible, and he has two horns on his head, a cow head and a human body. People who saw it said that the gods came to earth. He brought the nine wells. So when he grew up, people recommended him as the leader of the tribe. Because they lived in the hot south, they called themselves Yanzu and Yandi. Once Yan Emperor saw a red bird holding a string of things like seeds. Yan Emperor saw the bird spit it out. Yan Emperor picked it up. The bird flew around him three times, chirped for a while and flew away. Emperor Yan thought it was the food seed sent by the emperor of heaven to the red bird, so he buried the seed in the soil. It was also made of wood to teach people to loosen the soil and dig wells to irrigate the seedlings. This autumn, a large area of seedlings matured. How happy people are! We all remember the merits of Emperor Yan and call him Shennong. In this way, the surrounding tribes also called Yandi tribe Shennong tribe, and called him Shennong, the leader of the agricultural tribe. (“ surname ” originally meant a kind of deity, which represented the common name of tribal leaders in primitive society, but later scholars interpreted it as a deity, which is related to the later rise of Chinese mythology.) Shennong is the last deity since the emergence of the five surnames. The Chinese gods created people, built houses for fire, married tribes, sowed grass and grain, raised livestock, planted land and crops, and all the preparations for people’s lives have been completed. The era of Chinese myth has ended and the era of legend has come. Shennong was originally the leader of the tribe surnamed Jiang in the Jiangshui River Basin. Later, he invented farm tools to teach people to farm, raise, make pottery, spin and use fire. He made outstanding achievements and took the name of fire virtue. Therefore, he was named Emperor Yan, honored as Shennong, and later generations honored him as the God of Chinese agriculture.
Version 1 of Shennong’s story of tasting herbs
In ancient times, people didn’t have much to eat. They lived by rubbing grass seeds, picking wild fruits, and hunting birds and animals. Sometimes when you eat something you shouldn’t eat and get poisoned, you will be poisoned to death when it is serious. When people get sick, they don’t know how to apply the right medicine to the case. They are all tough. If they can survive, they will be fine. If they can’t survive, they will die. Emperor Shennong was worried about this. He decided to taste hundreds of herbs, determine the medicine, and eliminate disasters and diseases for everyone. Once, Shennong’s daughter Princess Huarui was ill. Shennong had a hard time. After thinking about it, he grabbed some grass roots, bark, wild fruits and stone noodles, counted them, and asked Princess Huarui to eat them. He was busy and left. Princess stamen took the medicine and her stomach hurt like a knife. It’s frightening to give birth to a little bird just a short time ago. They all said it was a monster. They quickly got it out and pulled it. Who knows that the bird is human. Seeing that his family bothered him, he flew to the ground to find Shennong. Shennong was dozing off under the tree when he heard: “ Jiji, grandpa! Jiji, grandpa& rdquo; Looking up, it was a bird. I thought it was annoying, so I swung my arm: “ Whoosh &mdash& mdash;& rdquo; With a loud noise, he drove it away. After a while, the bird flew back to the tree Also called: “ Jiji, grandpa! Jiji, grandpa& rdquo; Shennong felt strange. He picked up a piece of garbage and threw it on the tree. It scared him away. After a while, the bird returned to the tree and called: “ Grandpa, Jiji! Grandpa, Jiji& rdquo; As soon as Shennong understood his thoughts, he lifted his left arm and said: “ If you were my nephew, you would fall on my neck& rdquo; The bird really fluttered down and landed on Shennong’s left neck. Shennong looked at the bird. It was green and transparent. He could see everything in his stomach clearly. As soon as Shennong opened his mouth, the bird swallowed the saliva. Hey, how did you swallow the saliva? You can see it clearly. Shennong was very happy. Shennong returned home with the exquisite bird. When the family saw it, they were scared and retreated, saying: “ Pull it, monster, pull it &hellip& hellip;& rdquo; Shennong laughed and said: “ This is not a monster, it’s a baby! Just call it a stamen bird& rdquo; Shennong boiled the twelve herbs Princess stamen had eaten separately in the pot. Boil it and feed it to the bird. Feed it and watch it. See where the medicine goes to the bird’s stomach and what changes it has. Let’s taste it again and see what it tastes like in our stomach. After feeding the twelve herbs, I tasted them. I walked through the twelve meridians of three yin, three yang of hands and feet. Shennong took the bird up the mountain, drilled into the old forest, and picked all kinds of grass roots, bark, seeds and fruits; Catch all kinds of birds and animals, fish, turtles, shrimps and insects; Excavate all kinds of stones and minerals, feed the birds the same, and taste the same. Observe and understand what course they go through, what nature they are, and what diseases they treat. But every flavor only makes a circle in the twelve meridians, which cannot be exceeded. Over time, Shennong formulated the twelve meridians of the human body and the materia medica classic. Shennong thought about it. He was not at ease, so he entrusted the bird to continue the verification. He came to Taihang Mountain, traveled for ninety-eighty-one days, came to xiaobeiding (Shennong altar), and caught the full crown worm to feed the bird. Unexpectedly, the worm’s poison gas was too large, which broke the bird’s intestines and died. Shennong really regretted it. He was so sad that he burst into tears. After crying, he chose good wood and carved a bird. He took it with him wherever he went. Later, Shennong mistakenly tasted the heartbroken grass and died in the baicaowa on both sides of the xiaobeiding. On the top of the mountain in the northwest of baicaowa, there is a stone like a man who bends down and hugs his belly. It is said that Shennong changed it. In order to commemorate Shennong’s creation of traditional Chinese medicine and preparation of Materia Medica, people renamed xiaobeiding as Shennong altar and built Shennong temple on it. In the temple, there was a statue of Shennong, holding a stamen bird in his left hand and medicine in his right hand. Every day, many people watch the scenery of Shennong altar and worship the statue of Shennong.
Shennong tastes a hundred herbs version 2
In ancient times, grains and weeds grew together, and medicines and flowers blossomed together. No one could tell which grains could be eaten and which herbs could cure diseases. The people of Li live by hunting. The birds in the sky are less and less, and the animals in the ground are less and less. People have to starve. Who wants to get sore and get sick? No medicine, no death, no skin! Shennong looked at the sufferings of the common people and felt pain in his heart. How to feed the people? How to cure people? Shennong thought hard for three days and nights, and finally came up with an idea. On the fourth day, he set out with a group of subjects from his hometown Suizhou Lishan to the northwest mountains. They walked and walked. Their legs were swollen and their feet were cocooned. They kept walking. They walked for seventy-nine days and came to a place. I saw the mountains one after another, the canyons one after another, and the mountains were full of exotic flowers and plants. I could smell the fragrance all the way. Shennong and his companions were walking forward when suddenly a group of wolves, insects, tigers and leopards came out of the canyon and surrounded them. Shennong immediately asked his subjects to wave divine whip and hit the beasts. One group was beaten away, and another came up. It took seven days and seven nights to drive away all the beasts. Those tigers, leopards and pythons were scratched one by one by the divine whip, and later turned into stripes on their skin. At this time, the subjects said that it was too dangerous here and urged Shennong to go back. Shennong shook his head and said: “ Can’t go back! The people of Li are hungry and have no food. How can we go back& rdquo; With these words, he led the way into the canyon and came to the foot of a vast mountain. Half of the mountain is stuck in the clouds, surrounded by knife cut cliffs. There are waterfalls hanging on the cliffs, mossy and smooth. It seems that you can’t go up without a ladder to the sky. The subjects advised him to forget it and go back as soon as possible. Shennong shook his head: “ Can’t go back! The people of Li are hungry and have no food. How can we go back& rdquo; He stood on a small stone mountain, facing the high mountain, looking up, down, left and right, thinking and thinking. Later, people called the small mountain he stood on “ Wangnong Pavilion ”. Then he saw several golden monkeys climbing along the high hanging ancient rattan and the rotten wood lying on the side of the cliff. Shennong had an idea. Yes! He then called the subjects to cut wood poles, cut vines, build shelves against the cliffs, and build one layer a day, from spring to summer, from autumn to winter, regardless of wind, rain, snow and ice, he never stopped work. It took a whole year and 360 stories to reach the top of the mountain. It is said that the scaffolding used by people to build buildings later was the way to learn from Shennong. Shennong and his subjects climbed the wooden frame and reached the top of the mountain. Hey! The mountain is really a world of flowers and plants, red, green, white, yellow, all kinds of, dense. Shennong liked it very much. He told his subjects to guard against Wolves, insects, tigers and leopards. He picked flowers and plants himself and put them in his mouth. In order to taste all kinds of herbs here, find food and medicine for the people, Shennong asked his subjects to plant rows of fir trees on the mountain as a wall to prevent wild animals, and build thatched houses inside the wall. Later, people called the place where Shennong lived “ Wood City ”. During the day, he led his subjects to the mountain to taste all kinds of herbs. At night, he asked his subjects to start a bonfire. He lit the fire and recorded it in detail: which grasses are bitter, which are hot, which are cold, which can satisfy hunger, and which can cure diseases. Once, he put a piece of grass in his mouth and fell down. The subjects hurriedly helped him sit up. He knew that he was poisoned, but he could no longer speak. He had to use his last strength to point to a bright red ganoderma lucidum in front of him and his mouth. The subjects hurriedly put the red ganoderma lucidum into their mouths and fed it to him. Shennong ate Ganoderma lucidum. The poison gas was relieved. He was not dizzy and could speak. Since then, people have said that Ganoderma lucidum can bring the dead back to life. The subjects worried that it was too dangerous for him to taste the grass like this, so they advised him to go back down the mountain. He shook his head and said: “ Can’t go back! The people of Li are hungry and have no food. How can we go back& rdquo; Then he went on to taste the herbs. After tasting one mountain of flowers and plants, he went to another mountain to taste them. He still climbed it with a wooden pole. I have tasted it for forty-nine days, and have traveled all over the mountains here. He tasted that wheat, rice, millet and sorghum could satisfy his hunger, so he asked his subjects to take the seeds back and let the people plant them. This was the later five grains. He tasted 365 kinds of herbs and wrote Shennong’s materia medica. He asked his subjects to take it back to cure the people all over the world. After tasting all kinds of herbs, Shennong found five grains to satisfy the hunger and herbs to cure diseases for the people. He came to Huisheng stronghold and was ready to go back down the mountain. He looked around and saw that the wooden frame built all over the mountain had disappeared. It turned out that the wooden poles that built the scaffold took root and sprouted in the rain. Over the years, they even grew into a vast forest. Shennong was in a dilemma when suddenly a group of white cranes flew into the sky and took him and some of his subjects to the heaven court. Since then, Huisheng stronghold has been fragrant all year round. In order to commemorate Shennong’s achievements in tasting hundreds of herbs and benefiting the world, the common people named this vast forest as “Shennongjia”. Change the name of Huisheng stronghold where Shennong ascended to heaven to “ Liuxiang stronghold ”.

Shennong tastes a hundred herbs version 3
In ancient times, people ate wild grass, drank raw water, ate wild fruits on trees, and ate small insects crawling on the ground, so they often got sick, poisoned, or injured. Shennong taught human beings how to sow grain and use their own labor to ensure adequate means of livelihood. Shennong is a loving God. He has an ox head and a human body. His strength is boundless. He often helps poor people to farm. Like an ox, he works hard for human beings. Human beings learned to farm with Shennong, and had enough food. From then on, they did not worry about starvation. However, many people often get sick after having a full meal. Some people have been ill for a long time and can only survive until they die. After Shennong knew this kind of thing, he felt very anxious. He did not believe that the witch doctor asked for divination, but he also had no way to cure the disease. Therefore, he discussed with many people how to cure people’s diseases and make them get rid of the trouble of diseases. He thought of many ways, such as fire, water, sun, freezing, and so on. Although he could alleviate the symptoms of some diseases, the effect was not ideal. One day, Shennong came to Jingang, Taiyuan, Shanxi Province to taste the plants and found that the plants and trees had various tastes, such as sour, sweet, bitter and spicy. He gave the bitter grass to people who coughed more than once, and this person’s cough was immediately relieved; Give the sour grass to a person who has a stomach disease, and the person’s stomach won’t hurt.

Original text: the people have diseases, but the medicine stone is unknown. Emperor Yan (Shennong) began to nourish the plants and trees, observe their cold, warm, peaceful and hot nature, and distinguish the righteousness of their monarchs, ministers, assistants and envoys. After tasting 70 poisons in a day, they were transformed into gods. Therefore, they wrote a book to cure the nation, and the way of medical treatment began from then on. The ancestors were ill, but medicine had not been invented. Shennong began to taste all kinds of herbs, to observe the cold, warm, peaceful and hot properties of herbs, and to identify the relationship among herbs like monarch, minister, assistant and envoy. One day he encountered 70 kinds of poisons, and he miraculously dissolved them. So I wrote down the medicinal properties to treat the diseases of the people, and the pharmaceutical industry of our country was born from then on.
The story of Shennong whip medicine
After Nu Wa mended the sky, I don’t know how many years later, a child, Shennong, was born in a cave in the Lieshan mountain. When she grew up, she became a tribal leader. One day, Shennong went to a tribe near the mountains and forests and saw that the wild animals he had hunted were thrown everywhere. When I asked, I realized that there were many wild animals in this area, and there was too much meat to eat. Again. He went to another tribe and saw that they were abandoning a large number of sorghum and millet. Emperor Yan thought it was a pity. The local people laughed and said: “ What a pity! In a few days, Xingu will be ripe again& rdquo; (this is the three crops of grain that the South receives a year.) after coming back, Shennong thought about these two things all day. He was thinking when a group of children came in noisily. He asked the children why they quarreled. The children scrambled to tell him that one of them had two bows, and the other had two arrows. The two had agreed to exchange them. Later, one of the bows went back on his word, so they quarreled. Shennong immediately opened his mind. He thought, can’t the tribes with more meat exchange with the tribes with more millet? (in the early primitive society, hundreds of thousands of tribal individuals were few. Later, there were more tribal alliances, more people, more food, more selfish leaders, and private ownership. It can be seen that since ancient times, human wars have been fought for food and the right to exist, no matter how modern they are.) He didn’t have time to greet the children and ran out happily. After discussing with the chiefs of several tribes, he decided that every ten days, at the middle of the day, everyone would take the extra things to a designated place (market) and exchange them for what they needed. People all agreed and happily took their extra things to the designated place. At this time, people come and go, bustling, very lively. They exchanged what they needed with each other. This is the beginning of bartering and the mid day market. It is also a kind of free trade in which people in primitive society were simple in heart and simple in life. Unfortunately, robbers and robbers, mainly by nomadic tribes, changed people’s simple and simple life. In order to protect their own tribes and territories, countries and classes emerged. At that time, people did not know what to do when they got sick. They could only rely on their own physical strength to resist, and some had to wait to die. Shennong thought that there were strange flowers and plants in the garden of the emperor of heaven. Maybe he could cure the disease. He decided to go to heaven. At that time, there were two ways to heaven: one was from the Kunlun Mountains; The other one climbs up a big tree called Jianmu from Duguang. Shennong chose to ascend to heaven from the wild wood of Duguang. He chose a large handful of Yao grass. When he walked out of the garden, he met the emperor of heaven. The emperor said that this Yao grass could not cure many people’s diseases. He gave him a divine whip, which could whip and identify that the herbs were toxic. That’s why Chinese herbs are called. Shennong took this whip and walked all the way from duguangzhiye. It is said that Shennong whip medicine can be found in Western Hubei, China. That mountain is called shennongyuan. One day, when he saw a leaf, he was thirsty, so he picked a few and chewed them in his mouth. This chewing really quenched his thirst, and Shennong pulled a few more and chewed. He felt something rubbing up and down his stomach. His stomach was transparent. He saw that Xiaoye had wiped his stomach clean. This discovery. Made him very happy. He decided that this little leaf could quench thirst and detoxify. He decided to change the whip medicine to taste it. If it was poisoned, he would use it to save him. He called Xiao Ye “ Check ” (meaning of inspection). Later generations read vernacular and called it “ Tea ”. Shennong walked and tasted all kinds of herbs along the way. Back to the burning mountain. Shennong often gets poisoned when he tastes herbs, thanks to “ Check ” Saved him. It is said that he has tasted 398000 kinds of flowers, grass, roots and leaves. He made up his mind to taste all the grass. On that day, he suddenly found a vine like plant climbing the tree, with small yellow flowers. The leaves would shrink one by one. He was so strange that he picked some leaves and chewed them in his mouth. Who knows this is a kind of herb with severe toxicity, called heartbreak herb. So Shennong died. Shennong’s medicine tasting tripod is still kept on Shenfu hill in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. (in Shennong’s time, there were only pottery, which had been damaged long ago. In order to commemorate the tribal leader who died for the people, later generations made a new tripod out of metal.) In order to commemorate his kindness and achievements, people regarded him as the God of the king of medicine and built the temple of the king of medicine. Every time Shennong’s birthday on April 26 of the lunar calendar (of course, it is the legendary date, which is estimated to be the day when the temple was built to commemorate the completion of the sacrifice), people came to the temple of the king of medicine to offer sacrifices. In the natural Chinese herbal medicine library at the junction of Sichuan, Hubei and Shaanxi, it is said that Shennong tasted all kinds of herbs. In order to commemorate his achievements, people call this area Shennongjia mountain area. Chinese myths and legends by Yuanke
