There are often stories about the protagonist “lianzhongsanyuan” who studied hard in the cold window in the opera. In fact, among the examinees in ancient times, it is very rare to get three yuan in a row. What is “triple play”? Many people don’t know this well.

This must start from the ancient imperial examination system. The imperial examination starts at the grass-roots level of the government, the state and the county, and is called the children’s examination. The examinee is called Tongsheng, the scholar after passing the exam, and the first one is called the desk chief.

Taking an examination of talents is a primary exam, commonly known as “quiz”. Since the children’s examination was a grass-roots examination in ancient times, its first desk top was not “Yuan”. The provincial examination is the beginning of the official imperial examination.

The provincial examination is the first pass of the formal scientific examination. One subject every three years as required. In case of the emperor’s jubilation, he would also issue an imperial edict to open it, known as “Enke”. The provincial examination is held in the provincial capital. The examination period is in August. It is divided into three sessions, also known as “autumn examination” and “autumn Wei”. Scholars from all over the province gathered in the provincial capital to compete for the high and low. After passing the examination, they were called Juren. After winning the Juren, they had the qualification to be an official. The first place is Jieyuan.

The next higher level is the joint examination, which is held in the spring under the auspices of the Ministry of rites, so it is also called “the Ministry of rites examination”, “spring examination”, “spring Wei” and “Li Wei”. The joint examination was held in the capital. The examinees were Ju Ren, who were called Gongshi after passing the examination. The first place in the joint examination is “Huiyuan”.

After the unveiling of the joint examination, the admitted Gongsheng students must take the imperial examination next month. Palace examination, also known as imperial examination and imperial examination, refers to the examination conducted by the Emperor himself. The imperial examination was held in the emperor’s Jinluan hall. Gongsheng took part in the examination. The emperor personally presided over the examination. After passing the examination, the first class was called Jinshi and the second class was called Jinshi origin, and the third class was called tongjinshi origin. The first place in the palace examination was “No. 1 scholar”, the second place was “No. 2”, and the third place was “Tanhua”.

An examinee can only be called a “triple winner” if he has won the first place in the three major examinations, that is, the three laurels of “Jieyuan”, “Huiyuan” and “No. 1” have been picked by the same person. Considering how many talents are competing in the country, it is difficult for talented candidates to guarantee that they will be the first in every exam. As long as they get the second place in one exam, they will not achieve three goals in a row.

Although it is very difficult, in history, there are still 17 students who have passed the pass and killed their generals and “scored three goals in a row”! They are: Zhang Youxin and cuiyuanhan of the Tang Dynasty; Sun he, Wang Zeng, song Xiang, Yang Li, Wang ruosur, Feng Jing of the Song Dynasty; Meng Songxian of the Jin Dynasty; Wang chongzhe of Yuan Dynasty; Huang Guan, Shang Yun and Wang Mingshi of the Ming Dynasty; Qian Yu, chenjichang, daiquheng and wangyubi of the Qing Dynasty. They are worthy of being the heroes of the past dynasties and the Wizards among the Wizards!

Among them, wangmingshi and wangyubi are the two “Wu Sanyuan”. Wangmingshi was a native of Yongjia, Zhejiang Province. During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, he was awarded a thousand royal guards. He was well versed in classics and history, good at poetry and calligraphy. At that time, he called his martial arts, poetry and calligraphy “three wonders”. What is particularly commendable is that he has a firm nature and does not fawn on power. Wangyubi was also a native of Zhejiang Province. During the reign of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, he even won three yuan in martial arts. At the end of the Ming Dynasty, he once took the martial arts talent examination. He ranked first in archery and was known as a “divine Archer”, so people praised him as “wusiyuan”. Although he was born as a warrior, he could not put down his books. He was also a rare versatile writer!
