Of course, these two characters also exist in history. Why can they become the door god? There is another legend that needs to be understood.

Since the Yuan Dynasty, folk romance and drama have become increasingly powerful. The earliest legend of Qin Qiong as the door god is that after Emperor Taizong became emperor, he often heard or saw ghosts at night, which made him scared. To this end, general Qin Qiong volunteered and said, “Yuchi Gong and I are fully armoured at night to guard the palace gate for your majesty!” As a result, ghosts did not appear that night.

In great joy, you can’t let two generals stand guard outside the palace gate every day. Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty asked people to paint portraits of Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong and paste them on the gate. This story was later incorporated into the best-selling book journey to the West in the Ming Dynasty. Since then, Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong have been completely fixed as door gods. However, in journey to the west, Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong become door gods, and the story is more tortuous and literary.

What does journey to the West say?

In the early years of the Tang Dynasty, there was a Jinghe River near Chang’an. The old dragon king of Jinghe River violated tiantiao and his crime should be beheaded. Therefore, the Jade Emperor sent Wei Zheng, a minister of the Tang Dynasty, to supervise the execution of the old dragon king at 3:45 p.m. the next day. In order to protect his life, the Dragon King of Jinghe turned into a human one day before his execution. He went to the palace and begged Emperor Taizong Li Shimin to hold Wei Zheng down the next day. If Wei Zheng doesn’t have time to be a beheader, the old dragon king can keep the dragon head. Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty was full of promises. He felt that Wei Zheng was his own subordinate, which was easy to handle. The next day, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty let Wei Zheng enter the court and let him play chess with him all day. The purpose was to make Wei Zheng unable to get away. Wei Zheng was in the palace, so of course he couldn’t go to supervise the beheading of Jinghe Laolong. Unexpectedly, at a quarter past noon, Wei Zheng, who was playing go with Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, sat there and dozed off! Emperor Taizong was too concerned to wake him up. Wei Zheng just used this to take a nap, and his soul went out of his body to kill the Jinghe old dragon! After the Dragon King of Jinghe was beheaded, he deeply complained that Emperor Taizong had broken his promise, and the ghost went to the palace night and night to make a big noise and beg for his life. Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty was so annoyed by the ghost of the old dragon king every night that he had to ask his ministers for advice. To this end, general Qin Qiong stood up and said, “I am willing to stand outside the door with Yuchi Gong in military uniform. The ghost of the Dragon King naturally dares not to disturb the palace!” Sure enough, there were two generals guarding the gate, and the ghost of the Dragon King didn’t dare to appear. Emperor Taizong finally had a good night’s sleep. In the future, in order to avoid the hardship of the second general, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty asked court painters to paint the images of Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong and post them on the main gate of the court. As the story spread, the folk followed suit, and Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong were also pasted on their own door. The two brothers began to stand guard for our Chinese people, and have been standing until now.

Even folklore is not groundless. So why did the people choose Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong as the door gods? Are they Kongwu? Is it their prestige or their excellent martial arts? Both! But the most important thing is that these two generals and heroes are good-natured, loyal and dutiful, so they can stand out among so many heroes in China. The reason why Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong were finally selected as “door gods” is the highest recognition of our Chinese people for the qualities of these two heroes in the Sui and Tang Dynasties!.
