When it comes to immortals, you may immediately think of those people who have boundless power and are immortal. Their appearance is no different from that of human beings. The difference is that they have superhuman abilities. In China’s immortal culture, all things in the world can be cultivated into immortals. No matter whether animals or plants, living or non living things, they must be cultivated into human beings if they want to become immortals.

This is somewhat similar to the gods in ancient Greek mythology. As we all know, the ancient Greek gods have a very important characteristic, that is, “God and man are alike in form”. In short, the ancient Greeks created gods according to the image of human beings, and all gods had the characteristics of human form and character.

When it comes to the gods in ancient Chinese mythology, the situation is different. Most of them are in the shape of “half man and half beast”, such as Nuwa with a human face and a snake body, Chiyou with a human body and a cow’s hoof. The most typical example is the queen mother of the West. The image of the queen mother of the west, which we think today, should be a graceful and dignified female emperor; In the book of mountains and seas, which is called the world’s oldest geographical and mythological work, the image of the West Queen Mother is as follows:

“The queen mother of the west looks like a human. She has a leopard tail and a tiger’s teeth and is good at roaring. Her hair is Dai Sheng. She is a fierce and five disabled person.” (the queen mother of the west looks like a human, but she has a leopard’s tail and tiger’s teeth, and likes to scream. She wears Yusheng on her fluffy hair. She is in charge of the fierce nature disasters and the murderous spirit of the five punishments.)

Since ancient times, scholars have believed that the existing text of the book of mountains and seas is not independent, but attached to the long lost map of mountains and seas, or simply the text description of the map. According to the text of the book of mountains and seas, later generations drew many magnificent and magnificent pictures, especially the gods, men and animals in them, which were full of fantastic breath and reflected the magnificent imagination of the ancient Chinese.

However, these pictures are not original ancient pictures after all, and they have mixed with the understanding and imagination of many future generations. In ancient times, what did the gods of the Chinese ancestors look like? Although the painting of mountains and seas is lost, we can still find some clues through other unearthed cultural relics.
